Inverse problems gather at eighty UPCT mathematicians around the world (31/03/2010)

Scientists and mathematicians around the world will gather for three days, from 6 to 9 April, at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, to celebrate the V Conference on Inverse Problems, Control and Optimization of Forms (PICOF).

From the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the conference are scheduled UPCT twelve international experts in this field, plus an industrial session, which was attended by a representative of a Boston company in the U.S. dedicated to solving inverse problems and a technician from the Airbus company, who will discuss the optimization of shapes in aeronautics.

The aim of this session will facilitate the collaboration of academia in the business and stress the importance of mathematics to achieve technological development.

The Congress will bring together more than eighty mathematics in the School of Industrial Engineering UPCT located on the campus of the Wall.

The program is completed with a meeting on North-South Cooperation, sponsored by the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control and the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which aims to promote collaboration in applied mathematics from the developing countries of Maghreb (Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco) with the Mediterranean European countries, mainly Spain, France and Italy.

Solving a direct problem, as finding the roots of an algebraic equation, or predict the effects of an action, means progressive analysis or reasoning from the premises to reach conclusions.

Instead, the resolution of an inverse problem involves synthesis, or backward reasoning, since the conclusions up to the premises, the effects to their causes.

Have multiple solutions or insoluble.

It would be like an encyclopedia to find the best definition would fit a particular concept, before knowing the word.

The inverse problem arises in disciplines such as geophysics, medical imaging, remote sensing, ocean acoustic tomography and astronomy.

The Congress also will delve into the control fields, such as the vibrations of mechanical systems in order to minimize the noise generated or guiding of moving objects such as satellites or unmanned rockets, and "shape optimization" , which seeks the ideal behavior in terms of minimum power and speed in achieving a given path from the development of the wings of planes and submarine rudders.
