Local Police Launches Safe Crossing program (22/02/2010)

The Department of Public Highway Traffic and Local Police Cartagena elPrograma has launched 'Safe Crossing' in order to check that drivers comply with the preference of pedestrians to cross at zebra crossings without traffic lights which focuses more traffic.

This first phase of the program, followed by a second in which it will hold a road to greater vigilance so that the vertical and horizontal signaling of pedestrian crossings is kept in perfect condition.

This program will be activated during a week of each month in those steps which are determined according to two criteria: on the one hand, conducting a traffic study on the relationship between the number of vehicles crossing and the number of pedestrians using the crosswalk, and other accidents statistics shows no traffic light pedestrian crossings where there are higher rates of claims.

This activity will be conducted Units and Sections Biker Old Town Local Police Traffic, which monitored for a period of 45 minutes twice a day, that drivers comply with the preference of pedestrians, claiming infringements occur.

Thus, after the end of the weekly monitoring period, shall report to the headquarters of the results and develop, through some forms, a statistical control.

Before the start of the program, which is included in the Municipal Road Safety Plan of the City of Cartagena, will be advertised regularly for a week on the municipal website and other local media.
