Feve tenders for 16 million euros to build four cars for the line Cartagena-Los Nietos (30/12/2009)

The investment amounts to 16 million euros and the construction deadline is 18 months.

To follow this invitation the President's commitment Feve, Angel Villalba, announced Parliamentary Committee on the House of Representatives last October.

Feve with this investment is put in front of the meter-gauge railway modernization through the train-tram model.

Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria are on stage investor in what purports to be the introduction of the tram system in Feve.

Feve has bid for an amount of € 16,000,000 to build four cars for the performance of passenger services on the line Cartagena-Los Nietos, fulfilling the commitment made in Parliament by the President of the Railway Company, Angel Villalba, the last October when he announced the conversion to the tram system in this line Cartagena-Los Nietos.

The bid also represents the first step for the future implementation of the tramway in the city of Cartagena and the train-tram in the municipalities of La Union and in the District of La Manga del Mar Menor after extending the existing railway line .

This significant investment also means that Feve takes charge of the meter-gauge railway modernization in the conversion of it to the tram system, which will continue in Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria.

The deadline for the construction of the first four trains, trams is 18 months and during that time, Feve transformation project will culminate on line Cartagena-Los Nietos reforming the way tram stations and halts to adapt to this system .

Once the work is completed, the addition of four cars will make the line Cartagena-Los Nietos in one of the most modern in the country as it relates to rail transport.

Prior to the completion of these works and the construction of four cars will complete the Mobility Plan and Feasibility Study agreed last November between Feve, the Community of Murcia and the city of Cartagena.

Mobility Plan and Feasibility Study which are essential for Feve proposal to extend the Tram to the city of Cartagena on one side and the other to extend the walking path to the municipalities north of the shores of Mar Menor to San Pedro del Pinatar and the airport.

The proposed Feve: 55 miles of tramline

This is a tram system would work for the local passenger transport in the metropolitan and urban areas.

Includes three phases of action: Cartagena-Los Nietos, Cartagena city, and Los Urrutias-San Pedro del Pinatar with possible access to the airport of San Javier.

This will put a tramline running over 55 miles long.

This transport system is a mixed train unit for bi-directional movement without transshipment, and thus achieve very competitive travel times compared to other modes of transport.

The first phase would transform the current line of Feve Cartagena-Los Nietos in a way adapted to the train-tram system, so as to allow intermodality with other public transportation, like bus, as the tram system allows every 400 stops meters.

The second phase would include the construction of a tramway in the city of Cartagena and would be integrated with the previous installment.

This route would provide access to university faculties, to the bus station and railway, shopping centers or tourist areas such as the Port and the Old Quarter.

The last phase would include the extension of train-tram line to Los Urrutias, Los Alcazares, San Javier, Santiago de la Ribera and San Pedro del Pinatar.

It would be an extension of the tram from La Union, along the entire shore of the Mar Menor, with a length of 25 kilometers.

Some projects and some actions whose first step is the construction of four cars for the line Cartagena-Los Nietos, which show a strong commitment to sustainable mobility Feve and respectful to the environment posed by this means of transport.
