Hospital del Rosell de Cartagena form in anesthesiology professionals in Spain (18/11/2009)

These procedures are essential to ensure that patients recover quickly and completely from general anesthesia

. The Foundation for Health Research and Training in the Region of Murcia (FFIS) in the Community and the pharmaceutical company Schering-Plough will collaborate on the development of training in anesthesiology today after signing an agreement that involves the organization of the course 'Management muscle relaxation monitored and its proper reversal 'at the University Hospital Santa María del Rosell.

Under this agreement, the Cartagena hospital becomes the first in a series of centers throughout Spain that will be added in coming months for this initiative.

In this regard, both parties are aware of the importance of this training is to anesthesiologists and patients.

Six doctors of the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Rosell, experts in monitoring and muscle relaxation, taught for six months 15 weekly courses, lasting two days, aimed at anesthesiologists from various health centers throughout Spain, including professional own hospital and other health facilities in the region.

Each course consists of four lectures that will be addressed in the latest techniques and introduce new pharmacological advances for reversal of neuromuscular blockade, which occurs with general anesthesia.

In addition, attendees will witness case studies in operating rooms of different specialties, with use of new drug developments in neuromuscular reversal in the shortest time possible.

So far, the Hospital del Rosell been trained in monitoring and reversal of muscle relaxation in pilot courses, which have turned over 90 anesthesiologists in Spain.

Thanks to the success in these courses and the perceived need for training in this field has formalized the partnership between the FFIS and Schering Plough, which reaffirms the commitment of both institutions to promote training of health professionals, and to promote research and health education.

The head of the Anesthesiology and Reanimation Rosell, Dr. Álvarez Gómez, stressed the importance of technique and explained that "the monitoring of muscle relaxation, and the proper reversal of neuromuscular blockade that occurs during general anesthesia is a essential procedure in any surgery. "

Muscle relaxants used in general anesthesia can completely paralyze the muscles of patients, and this effect facilitates the physician's work, to prevent muscle offer resistance during the operation.

Furthermore, the reversal of anesthesia is essential to ensure that patients recover quickly and completely without risk of having difficulty breathing.

In fact, recent advances in anesthesiology is directed precisely to achieve a more rapid reversal, thus reducing the time of this process, which previously ranged from 9 to 49 minutes, less than 3 minutes, all with the guarantee for maximum safety and excellent quality of reversion, as critical for the patient and the anesthesiologist.
