Opens in Cartagena Valcárcel the new Casa Hogar Betania and rehabilitation of the headquarters of the Brotherhood mako (25/06/2009)

The President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, Cartagena opened today in the new Casa Hogar Betania, which manages the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (Marrajos) through its foundation.

Subsequently, the regional chief executive also presided over the reopening of the headquarters of the fraternity mako after rehabilitation.

La Casa Hogar Betania part of an initiative from the Foundation created in 1996 by the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno to exercise its social work.

Finally, it was in 1999 when the Home opened its doors for attention and acceptance, by the guild volunteers and contract staff, family-disadvantaged seniors.

In 2000, became a shelter around the clock, in which they resided eight elderly, keeping two old men in solitary day.

Initially was based on a given floor and then hire other, until, in 2007, the Company Cartagena Old City started preparations for the transfer of some floors would be renovated in 2008 to adapt to the conditions that the Autonomous Community set for major residential centers.

The facilities were inaugurated today are composed of three floors downstairs, one for common services (dining, lounge, kitchen, pantry and toilet) and the other two, together with two doubles, five singles, an office for carers, two bathrooms, two toilets and service areas.

Currently residing in the same eight elderly women and an elderly man, attended by five carers in system clock.

Of note is the voluntary cooperation of the components of the Brotherhood, especially the ladies meetings and youth groups makos.

The Autonomous Community, through the Ministry of Social Policy, Women and Immigration has contributed by providing the amount of 47,000 euros in the last two years.

As for the refurbished headquarters of the Brotherhood mako, might more properly speak of rebuilding the old clubhouse built between 1946 and 1949 as a building adjoining the church of Santa Maria, on a plot of 180 square meters owned by the Diocese of Cartagena loan in usufruct to the Brotherhood.

Although from a few years does not function as a social club, which plays another upcoming opened in 2001, but as a store of material and the setting for the organization of the processions, the sentimental value to the brotherhood of the building is very prominent.

In 2006 the building had a state of near ruin, which led to water leaks that affected part of the assets it retained.

Thanks to the 500,000 euros from the Autonomous Community, the Brotherhood launched a rehabilitation process which has been built without increasing the overall height, plant more, from three to four.

Work began in 2007 and completed a year later, then started the task of equipment.

In the same society has also helped the Old Town of Cartagena by providing funds for the rehabilitation of the facade.

The new facility has approximately 700 square meters and it will retain all the beds and changing images, banners and embroidered dresses of penitents, and the facilities necessary for the organization of the processions, entering the church through of this local.
