The new General Plan of Cartagena will destroy agriculture in the west coast, according to a report ANSE (22/01/2009)

The Southeastern Association of Naturalists claim that the new General Plan Municipal de Cartagena Management proposes the reclassification of all agricultural land (3,052,639.15 m2) between the coastal towns of Isla Plana and La Azohía, on the west coast Cartagena, in order to be urbanized.

If finally approved, this proposal would complete the development of the entire coastline between La Azohía and Mazarrón (which includes part of the municipalities of Cartagena and Mazarrón), in a strip about 10 km of coastline.

Urban development extend to the very edge of the protected area of La Muela-Cabo Tiñoso, and includes land classified as Soil Landscape Protection Guidelines on Coastal Protection in the Region of Murcia (DPOL. Decree 57/2004), some of them with Natural Habitat Community Interest.

Besides the environmental impact ANSE believes that the complete elimination of agriculture assumed that the area economy depends exclusively on urban development and tourism, thereby ensuring the unsustainable medium-long term.

Moreover, the urban development of this vast area along the planned in PERIs of Isla Plana and La Azohía or Partial Plans San Ginés and The Landmark, among others, will lead to excessive pressure on both the protected areas of the Muela-Cabo Tiñoso and coast to the beaches, with a load capacity will be clearly exceeded in summer.

To this we must add the marina project is currently handled at the mouth of the Rambla del Canar, thus creating an irreversible impact on a coastal stretch still clogged.

ANSE feels it must keep the qualification of this broad area and undeveloped Agricultural Protection and Landscape Protection undeveloped, and it should be encouraged to develop action programs aimed at improving recovery of the landscape and biodiversity associated with agriculture and public domain areas (Costas and Channels).

The Association draws attention to that, even within the protected area of La Muela-Cabo Tiñoso is guaranteed the conservation of dryland agricultural landscapes, because the same council is pushing for the legalization of homes that violate the planning regulations and protection.
