Eduardo Mendoza choose Mandarache Award with a romance in ancient Rome (14/01/2009)

The adventures of a traveler in the early days of the Christian era are the main plot of the novel "The amazing journey of Pomponio Flato", a book that the writer Eduardo Mendoza choose Mandarache Award in its fourth edition.

As background, the history of the Roman Empire, an era that has always fascinated the author because it's interesting, very funny and because it has many similarities with the present moment, said Mendoza.

And as a backdrop, Nazareth, where the protagonist gets involved in solving a crime and is mixed with historical and biblical figures like Jesus.

Eduardo Mendoza is on a visit to Cartagena for several meetings with readers in the framework of Mandarache program to promote reading.

The amazing journey of Pomponio Flato (Seix Barral, 2008) is the title already reading more than 2,000 young people this year have enrolled as a juror in this popular literary prize.

Mendoza is the second of this year's finalists to visit the port city.

In December it was the turn caravaqueño Luis Leante author with his novel See if I love you, and in February will be the youngest of the three, Ricardo Menéndez Salmon, who quit the program of meetings with authorities, with the offense.

This morning the writer held a meeting with 600 high school students in the auditorium of the UPCT, accompanied by Council of Youth and Culture, Javier Herrera and Rosario Montero, and Beatriz Villarino, professor and one of the contributors to this Award.

This afternoon, after 20 hours, will do the same with academics and the general public in the Cultural Center Foundation in Cartagena CajaMurcia.

On Thursday, the Catalan writer continue in Cartagena for a meeting with students of the IES Ben Arabi after 11 hours.

Mendoza has said he feels privileged to participate because as a finalist in a project of this type, although it acknowledges that prizes ambition.

Like the meeting itself, the writers have little opportunity to meet with readers, who are employees of a novel.

A book is halfway between what it writes and reads, he said.

The amazing journey of Pomponio Flato exudes the absurd humor, irreverent and ironic of all his novels.

Perhaps for this reason that a writer widely read by young audiences.

The conclusion I draw is that at the end, my books, what remains is the good feeling, something that rarely happens with most writers.

There is no difference between humor and I, because I built.

Do not try to do novels with humor, is that just see things in that light, said Mendoza.

Mendoza has stated that his book is intended to inoculate readers curious about the story, which he said has the lure of research in people's lives: what happened, what they did, what they ate ...

And it gets also a parody of all these historical novels have emerged in recent times.

Entertainment are innocent, harmless and legitimate.

But in my novel there is no mystery of antiquity that has its end in 2007.

It happens in antiquity, but today written to a modern reader, the writer concluded.

The fourth edition of the award jury has Mandarache than 2,100 young people between 15 and 30, organized in 350 councils from reading mostly from secondary schools and the Polytechnic University.

The participants read the three novels, will meet the finalists and three authors during the month of April will vote their favorite via the official website www.premiomandarache.es.
