The mayor wants more funding for municipalities (21/11/2008)

The first municipal authority considers that the decrease of 1,000 million euros for the contribution of the State Budget to the 8,200 municipalities that exist in Spain, shows that these are antimunicipalistas and antisocial, as one of the areas that suffers the most is the social benefits.

Pilar Barreiro gave as an example the Department of Social Services of the City of Cartagena, whose budget is around 8 million euros of which only 2 are input from the central government.

The mayor believes that it is unacceptable that the involvement of local councils in State taxes, taxes paid by all citizens, maintain the same percentage 30 years ago, and proposes, among other initiatives, the central government to establish a line aid to municipalities as well as that provided for financial institutions.

Moreover, as a member of the Mayors Commission representatives in Congress, Barreiro asked to have a compensation fund of 80 million uros for municipalities of less than 75,000 inhabitants, who are hardest hit by the crisis, that there is increasing aid for social service, to stop municipal entities have more deficits, and up the advancement of taxes.
