The Municipal Archives marks the anniversary of the Spanish flu in Cartagena with an exhibition (19/11/2008)

This year and next 90 years met the so-called Spanish flu (or influenza was properly nor did it originate in Spain).

Was given global pandemic, caused by a variety of avian virus adapted to humans, causing worldwide more than 50 million victims.

Apparently originated in Kansas (United States) in late winter of 1918, spread very rapidly in that country and then brought by the troops who landed in Europe to fight in the First World War, throughout Europe and worldwide.

Was found in Spain on May 22 in Madrid and Cartagena on 25 November.

After successive waves, of which the most deadly was the fall of 1918, died in the spring of 1919, leaving the city, which by then was less than 100,000, more than 1,000 dead.

To mark this anniversary, the Municipal Archives of Cartagena has a small exhibition, with documentation from their funds and any particular contribution.

It may be contemporary newspapers, publications, a map of the city dating from some years before the arrival of this 'flu', as well as telegrams and other documents.

The exhibition will run until next December in time from 9 to 13.45 hours and from 17 to 19.45 hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and Monday and Friday mornings only.
