Society of Oblivion, Araceli Martínez (06/11/2008)

Autopsies Pavilion, a place heavily connoted by the role he has played for three centuries and a paradigmatic example of medical building by the standards of sanitation force in the eighteenth century, is placed in close relationship with the mechanisms of art through a Emerging Artists rigorous project.

Hosted by its unique architecture, this procedure uses the characteristics of the building to show as if it were a late dissection, traces the scars of a society deeply affected by amnesia.

Araceli Martinez developed a work supported by the mechanisms of the art audiovisual and shows a group of people, who face the camera or viewer act to erase the obsessions that can not be detached in the everyday.

The City of Cartagena, Cartagena Port of Cultures and the Institute of Youth in the Region of Murcia through Laboratorio de Arte Joven, have joined forces in this project intended to strengthen and promote those manifestations of emerging contemporary art.

The infinity of information and images spill over into contemporary society shape a society increasingly sensitive to the image where the memory, along with their means, transforms.

The overabundance of information and media-generated images, becomes instant communication at the expense of temporal coherence pursued the story of events in memory registry.

The city is a constant victim of its visual context.

The visual cycle that could belong to assume that the purpose of the image instead of memory outside of forgetting.

An oversight that, according to Deleuze

From the project 'Oblivion Society', work in progress (2005-2008), artist Araceli Martinez tries to find out through interviews with anonymous people what words they want to forget.

The initial objective of the project is to analyze and study the process of forgetting through performance, photography and video art.

The project offers, starting in a symbolic gesture, a laying of the forgotten.

The artist writes on the foreheads of the participants, the words previously selected by them with a black pen.

Facing the camera, delete the message.

In the assembly of the videos, has respected the time that each person uses to perform the action, but later the narrative sense of the image is reversed again conjuring previously deleted word, thus generating a time-another, dilated a time for reflection.

Many people have chosen names, dates of deaths of family or personal feelings that are collective.

Sometimes, people of different age, race, sex and nationality choose the same words to obsessively want to forget.

This mechanism can function as a symbolic exercise of awareness of what one wants to forget, working out like a catharsis or installed in the attention to the problem of the self.

One of the objectives of the project is to analyze the context and history of the city where the person lives influences their choice.

The last phase of the project, people recorded in Berlin, is to inquire about what words you wish to erase in a city with a history as impressive and meaningful to the Western world.

The specific intention is to analyze where the remains of memory and collective forgetting.

The result of the project so far are more than two hundred people recorded in Spain (Murcia, Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona), Italy (Turin) and Germany (Berlin) that form a complete mosaic conceptual concerns about contemporary society.

The exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 to 14 hours.
