A Christmas lights to save (28/10/2008)

Cartagena City Council has taken to hiring the installation of Christmas lights in three separate contracts for the placement of light decorations in the historical center, districts and provincial councils.

The total sum amounts to 383,000 euros which represents a saving of 90,000 euros on the lights installed last year.

This will reduce the number of ornaments in some parts of the city.

The design of lighting and timing have been reformed to cut municipal spending and power consumption without harming the areas where traditional trade is concentrated and without affecting the busiest parts of town.

Thus, lighting decorations be divided between the Old Quarter and the Eixample, with special lighting in the Palace Hall and Cultural Center Luzzy Ramón Alonso, and neighborhood and county.

All the ornaments of the Town Hall, Ramon Alonso Cultural Center and the Old Town Luzzy be made with microbombillas and LEDS, which are low power, while in the Eixample bulbs such alternate with traditional lighting.

In neighborhoods and county, the lights will be conventional.

The municipal government has also decided to cut the days when the lighting system will be operational.

The date on which used to coincide with the bridge in December, will be delayed this year until the 19th of December.

And this year the lights will not be lit all night, but, to save on this expense, they shall be turned off around midnight.
