Cross describes the excavation of the Carthaginian windlass of "Pompeii Spanish" (19/09/2008)

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pedro Alberto Cruz, and the Mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, this morning visited the archaeological excavation of Windlass Hill to learn about the progress of field work and raise awareness the main findings.

Cruz has not hesitated to describe the excavation of the winch "true Spanish Pompeii, a jewel of Roman archeology, not only in Spain but in Europe, which reinforces even more if possible, the importance of Cartagena as a reference Archaeological first order in the national and international scene. "

The Minister stressed, as one of the "pleasant surprises" in store next site, "the degree of conservation of floor and wall paintings, but has warned, the time that" there is still much that remains to be seen .

The best is yet to come in successive stages of excavation, "said Cruz.

The Project 'Pinwheel Archaeological Park' comprises three different fields of: excavation, research and museological of the southern slope of Cerro del Pinwheel, from the Baths of Honda street to street Adarve curia, one of the most emblematic areas the historic old city of Cartagena and, without doubt, an area of great interest to document the historical and archaeological successive stages from IV-III century BC to the present.

On January 15, 2008 began the excavation of the hill southeast of Cerro del Pinwheel.

Since then, this work undertakes an interdisciplinary team consisting of three archaeologists, three restorers, a surveyor and about 15 specialized workers.

The technical and scientific direction of the project is run by Madrid and José María José Miguel Noguera, University of Murcia, while the project management is the responsibility of the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, through the archaeologist Manuel Lechuga.

During these months, it has been documented almost all the planimetric development of public baths partially excavated in 1982 at the Honda street, and some of the rooms of a home structured around an atrium Tuscan type.

In the hot springs has acted in two heated rooms for supplementing the itinerary of the building thermal bath, also has defined a framed structure probably corresponding to the fore, open outdoor space dedicated to leisure and sports activities that formed part plant of this type of facility.

It is a rectangular space, whose central outdoor space is paved with bricks arranged in a herringbone pattern, bounded on four sides by a portico and covered with a roof to water.

In its south side, east and west, the peristalsis of the porch are composed of stucco Ionic order columns composed of sockets and shafts of brick topped by sandstone capitals, the head of the porch, peristalsis role of the north side, has an order of greater vertical development by two Corinthian columns composed of red travertine shafts and capitals of white marble.

The house would be articulated around a central atrium with roof supported by four Tuscan columns, of which have been conserved bases and shafts, and a central hole for the marble curb water supply.

Around the atrium will have five rooms: a small, located to the north, whose masonry walls retain an elevation about 3.50 meters, and four symmetrically arranged on their sides east and west.

Each of the latter has an area of 70 m2 and had a second floor, which would be accessed via a staircase built on the southeast side of the court.

The meticulous excavation process that develops is allowing to recover a large set of remains of paintings that decorated the various rooms of the house, some of which remain, still in its original position, cloths with an elevation of up to 3.50 m.

Both the baths and the house is bounded to the west by a road (decumano), which runs parallel to the street from the Aurora, which has been documented and a length of 30 m in length, this street has two phases: Republican period and a second Augustan age, delineates the house from the northeast to another street, in this case a thistle oriented southwest to northeast, as excavation is started in those days.

The Archaeological Park Project Cartagena winch is being undertaken through the Consortium 'Cartagena Port of Cultures "and has the direction and funding from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Tourism and Commerce.

The project involves digging, in the period 2008-2011, the 8,284 m2 of the southern slope of the hill, for which this area has been divided into 4 sections.

In parallel with the archaeological excavation will start a process of consolidation, restoration and enhancement of recorded structures, culminating in 2011 with the launch of the Center for Interpretation of the Archaeological Park, which will be located in the basement and first floor of new Health Centre building.

Based on preliminary results obtained so far in the process of archaeological excavation, it is deemed appropriate the holding of Open Days to show citizens that the project 'Archaeological Park Pinwheel' is already a reality on the way implementation.

In reaching this decision has been taken into account the large number of visitors who daily come to the fence of the excavation site and are interested in the outcome of it.

On the other hand, it was felt that the dates of these Conferences will be held ultimately were the right ones, because the city is celebrating precisely their parties Carthaginians and Romans.
