23 fewer cases of truancy (17/09/2008)

The Department of Education of the City of Cartagena, through the Municipal Truancy Program has conducted a study of children of compulsory school age in the county (up to 16 years) than in the past year 2007/08 amounts to A total of 24,789 students.

Of these, the total number of absentee children of 813 was recorded throughout the municipality, representing 3.28% of the population of compulsory school age, 23 cases less than the previous year.

In this regard it should be noted that after interventions from the Department, the 5.65% has returned to complete normality to their school, ceasing to be truants.

With respect to the intensity of truancy, since the beginning of the intervention until the end of the school year, it was found that 105 minors who were in the intense level, have significantly diminished the number of faults to their respective schools, from absenteeism to be intense to be sporadic, which means that after the surgical procedures performed in 13.5% of children has decreased significantly their truancy.

In regard to the disaffected lower profile, the same age range falls mainly between 14 and 16, being essentially repeaters first and second year of ESO (54.6% of the population served) and belong to very different social and ethnic groups and socio-familial types.

Absentee in the school population belonging to the gypsy is a decrease of 2% compared to data from the previous year, and 2.56% in relation to data for two courses.

Most disaffected students in school has a history characterized by the delay and failure in school.

Showing unmotivated and disinterested, do not participate in class and presented the school reject inappropriate behavior.

In addition, have low self-esteem and social skills deficits, so they are easily influenced by other students, imitating behaviors of all kinds: truancy, snuff consumption of alcohol, etc.

Some of the absentee children lack the basic material resources and have no textbooks or school supplies, so from the EPE aid is managed remedial education and textbooks (through the Bank of Used Textbooks ) to ensure equal opportunities.

A feature common to all families of children absentee is the lack of appreciation of the school and the carelessness of parents to the educational needs and school.

ACTIONS AGAINST TRUANCY

The Service of the Department of Education continues to be provided in close liaison with the Local Police and Social Workers and Educators of the Municipal Institute of Social Services and Social Care Department, the former being essential for the detection of cases and the latter for intervention actions.

You decide! "Inscribed on school calendars that are published on time each school year and distributed to the entire school community.

And as members of the Education Commission of the Southern Zone, and as was done last year, we should mention the parade with Tamborrada that took place on February 9, the day before the start of the course, as a call to return to school for all pupils in schools in this area (Schools Hannibal, Hasdrubal, Our Lady of the Sea and Bastarreche IES).

Finally, remind everyone of the obligation as citizens have to report cases of truancy that detect, collaborating with government in controlling and reducing this problem.
