Toumani Diabaté, the great musician of the kora, replaced Hector Zazou in La Mar de Músicas (26/06/2008)

Toumani Diabate plays the kora, a kind of harp music from the West African tradition which has 21 strings and that he, more than any other artist, is who was responsible for transmitting it to the world.

It is not merely a virtuoso of the kora, but also plays an important role in the community as a teacher, composer and as a transmitter of the musical tradition of his country, Mali.

Diabaté will perform on Sunday July 6 in La Mar de Músicas opening again the scene of the old cathedral, replacing Hector Zazou, who has had to cancel his concert at the festival, due to serious illness.

Toumani was born in the 60 in Bamako (Mali) in an exceptional family of griots with 71 generations of kora musicians passed on from father to son.

All of a prodigy, Toumani began playing the kora at age five.

In 1984 Toumani joined the musical ensemble accompanying the great diva Kandia Kouyate, the best-known female singer from Mali.

Toumani's first visit to the UK was in 1986.
