Sustainable Development recovering a species extinct gave (31/05/2008)

The Ministry of Sustainable Development and Planning, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) and the Association of Southeastern Naturalist (ASEAN) has launched a program for the recovery of Tallante garbancillo (Astragalus nitidiflorus) one of the plants most at risk of disappearing in Europe and that it was to become extinct.

Councilor Benito Mercader said that "the achievement of this species have recovered to the enrichment of the natural world is the result of the efforts that the Ministry is done to preserve biodiversity in the region, the result, in this case, collaboration with nonprofit organizations such as ASEAN and the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena. "

Garbancillo of Tallante is a small plant of the legume family (peas, beans, chickpeas), which occurs exclusively in the Campo de Cartagena.

It is, therefore, an endemic species, a species unique to this place.

The plant was discovered in 1909 near the port city, but there reunited again until 2004 when specimens were found in the head area of Pericón, currently there are eight villages with a total of 86 specimens in reserves future Anse La Muela Regional Park and Cape Tiñoso.

"The Tallante garbancillo of a plant is considered endangered by the National Catalogue of Endangered Species, so that the regional government is making a firm commitment to preserve and to revalue the native flora of Murcia, one of the pillars make the region a unique and different, "said Mercader.

The main objective of preservation of Tallante garbancillo plans to increase the number of stocks.

Other project activities are aimed at monitoring and development of populations and their habitat, and consider ecological, demographic, reproductive biology, genetics, plant management in the nursery and introductory essays in the field populations.

The conservation work of Tallante garbancillo are run by the Directorate General Environment of the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Planning and have the cooperation of the UPCT and Anse, under two separate agreements triennial called 'Conservation Actions Endangered Wild Flora of the Region of Murcia. "

The aggregate amount of both agreements is 110.00 euros.
