The temple found during excavations of windlass Cartagena will be open in mid-2016 (20/11/2015)

The Minister of Culture and Spokesperson, Noelia Arroyo visited today the site of the winch Cartagena for the results of recent excavations carried out within the project funded by the Repsol Foundation, especially the sanctuary seems to be dedicated to Egyptian deities Isis and Sarapis and is expected to be opened to the public in mid-2016.

Noelia Arroyo toured the area with the mayor of Cartagena, Jose Lopez, the manager of Cartagena Port of Cultures, Agustina Martinez, directors of the excavation, José Miguel Noguera and Maria Jose Madrid.

By the Repsol Foundation, attended by the Vice President of the Foundation, Ignacio Egea, director of the Social and Institutional Area, Javier Inclán, and the director of the Cartagena refinery, Juan Antonio Carrillo de Albornoz.

The excavation team showed some of the most relevant materials found and are being studied.

In total, they could see about fifteen small archaeological treasures, epigraphic and remains of sculptures and fragments of capitals.

Among the most outstanding pieces is, for example, the fragment of a sculpture that is believed to be the bottom of a statue of Isis.

Also, other materials were, as a brass candlestick preserved in an exceptional state and was discovered in the Atrium building.

The project includes the excavation, conservation and enhancement of space comprising the area between the building and the colonial Atrium Forum is an intervention promoted by the City of Cartagena, funded by the Repsol Foundation with 4.15 million euros and executed through Cartagena Port of Cultures.

The excavation was authorized by the Ministry of Culture in 2013.

The work is scheduled for completion in 2018. The first two phases of the four planned have already been implemented throughout 2014 and 2015 and have a budget of about 1.5 billion euros.

Temple of Isis and Sarapis

The second phase, now completed, has been developed along this year called Insula II.

The work has resulted in the identification of a sanctuary that seems to be dedicated to Egyptian deities Isis and Sarapis origin.

The group is chaired by a small temple that remains virtually full basement.

All around a porch that several of the sockets and shoes are kept develops and, in the background, possibly three rooms dedicated to priests and initiates open.

From now on, those responsible for the excavation will be responsible for drafting the enhancement of this area of ​​the museum and architectural adaptation, which is expected to be opened to the public next summer 2016.

During this visit, participants also learned about the outcome of the first phase, held in 2014, which focused on the adequacy of the Roman roads that surround the Insula I, filled with walkways to travel around the enclave.

Also, the excavation was completed several rooms and crumbling remains of mural paintings were collected.

I insula, known as the 'Barrio Roman Forum', is one block from the old Carthago Nova 2,500 square meters in two buildings preserved in excellent condition were identified: the so-called Building Atrium and a spa pretty full.

Prior to the agreement between the City and the Repsol Foundation, the Ministry of Culture held various jobs in the windlass and invested nearly three billion euros.

Investments are focused on the area of ​​the Curia and Health Center (2003-05), during excavations at the Insula I (07-09) and in carrying out its cover and museological (10-11), a project that he received the National Award for Restoration in 2011.
