UPCT researchers developed a multifunctional device for smart irrigation (19/10/2015)

Researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena have designed a network of sensors that can be used to manage personalized water resources in agricultural land.

System Wireless devices are configured to intelligently evaluate simultaneous parameters and soil, air and water, so that you can match the needs of each plot.

The system, dubbed GAIA2 and published in Agricultural Water Management, consists of a network of nodes or motes, each of which works like a small computer that can be configured to measure soil parameters (temperature, humidity) environmental (atmospheric pressure, room temperature, relative humidity) and quality of irrigation water.

This system has been developed for the Spanish company Edosoft Factory SL, which marketed.

The GAIA2 is a multifunctional device that allows one network node can be used in different types of crops, whether vegetable, fruit farms and vineyards.

Just change the type of sensor.

Another advantage is that the nodes also act as sensors or data receivers, also serve as information bridge between spaced apart by a distance of ten kilometers plots.

Sensor nodes are noted for their sturdiness; they are designed to be placed at ground level without fear of breakage when heavy farm machinery is used, such as when performing fumigation in vegetable crops.

Each node is equipped with an internal lithium polymer battery, an antenna for transmitting data, a waterproof case which is designed to measure, waterproof and humidity and solar panel.

When the sensor device as culture walk node is used, you only need to use batteries, because the device ensures a range of at least ten weeks, the usual duration of a horticultural agronomic cycle.

But when the GAIA 2 has the role of a repeater, you need to use a solar panel to ensure proper system operation.

The system is completed by a monitoring software that allows to know the real time all the parameters obtained with the sensors installed foot field.

From this information you can optimize irrigation water used and maximize production.
