The Region confirms the temporary suspension of activity of Befesa dump (tailings). (09/10/2015)

The Department of Environmental Control and Management of the Autonomous Community of Murcia has given ANSE resolution, issued on September 14, which is required by the company Befesa Industrial Waste Management, SL the temporary closure of the activity for the restoration of legality in the landfill and facilities for hazardous waste management prior to the Valley of Escombreras (Cartagena).

The resolution recognizes that Befesa has breached the conditions of the integrated environmental authorization, expressly forbidden to treat waste (liquid waste and contaminated containers), store drums in unauthorized places, perform mismanagement of asbestos waste and contaminated pipes Rainwater and tailings ravine.

The resolution also confirms the fears expressed in denouncing ANSE to the Autonomous Region last May: in the landfill Befesa have yielded many more waste than allowed, 761,094 m3 of 550,000 m3 intended, which was topographic been demonstrated by studies conducted by the Environmental Information Service and Integration of the region.

ANSE considered by Befesa management demonstrated a much higher volume of unauthorized waste, and inadequate treatment of an important part of them, risking the health of workers and the environment.

Moreover, the autonomous region should require compliance with the obligation to restore the dump adjoining mountainous areas illegally plowed, what the resolution says nothing, and it was resolved in other instances open disciplinary proceedings allegations of ANSE.

To ANSE, Befesa landfill in the Valley of tailings is an example of bad functioning of many facilities for waste treatment, and the lack of proper control by the authorities responsible for enforcing authorizations derived his Instead of a little political interest in these issues, lack of sensitivity to the business environment, and in many cases the lack of means of environmental bodies.

What happened in Befesa casts doubt on the controls of the Autonomous Region again.

There have been reports of an individual and of ANSE, and the intervention of the Civil Guard, which have contributed to check the terrible situation of the facilities and failure, again, permits and regulations.

Now, does anyone take responsibility ?.

Are you going to properly seal the landfill ?.

Will they restore the mountains destroyed by the same ?.

Will you keep the new government team qualification as Industrial Land of the Forest lands were before ?.
