Culture shows the Cartagena 50s through photographs of the architect and archaeologist Pedro San Martin (16/09/2015)

The Ministry of Culture, through the General Archive of the region, organized an exhibition of photographs of Cartagena 50s by the architect and archaeologist Pedro San Martin.

The exhibition, entitled 'Another look of Pedro San Martin.

Photographs 1954-1958 ', can be seen in the Municipal Archaeological Museum in the port city, thanks to the collaboration with the City of Cartagena.

The general director of Cultural Heritage, Maria Comas, the councilor for the Culture of Cartagena, Ricardo Segado, and the curator, Fernando Vazquez, presented today the exhibition, which opens at 20:00 am and will remain open until January 10.

Maria Comas said "the exhibition of this collection of photographs, donated to the Archives, are a welcome and necessary tribute to a pioneer man in recovery and enhancement of the regional heritage. And this recognition could not do it in another scenario It is not the Cartagena Archaeological Museum, the museum he created and where visitors can now discover a different, more personal and artistic look of Pedro San Martin ".

Photographs 1954-1958 'consists of 38 images taken by him in the city of Cartagena, and in its streets, monuments and traditions and festivities appear.

They are also reflected in the interest of the architect for the environment: the field and, above all, the coast and the sea.

It is a vision that the curator, university professor Fernando Vazquez, located between documentary representation and 'pictorialism' amateur because the pictures taken by San Martin displayed an evocative look through the sea The field, the metropolis, the people and their traditions become protagonists.

Because of his professional career, Pedro San Martin made numerous photographs documenting over 40,000 his thorough and multifaceted work, but this exhibition can now be seen in Cartagena focuses on his lesser-known aspect, in his role as artistic photographer.

In fact, it was one of the founders of the now legendary Photographic Association of Cartagena (Afocar) and his deputy for years.

Trajectory

Pedro Moro San Martin (Valladolid, 1921 - Cartagena, 2013) worked for years to preserve and disseminate the historical heritage of the region of Murcia.

Throughout nearly four decades, he was responsible for numerous archaeological excavations, especially in the city of Cartagena, among which certainly stands the Roman Theatre.

He also was responsible for the restoration of monuments in the entire region.

Author of large projects in Cartagena, I could see from his arrival the great potential and then hid the city was a visionary in the implementation of projects such as the first musealized site to enhance the dissemination and awareness of heritage.

Architect Defense Service National Artistic Heritage, was also provincial Minister of Fine Arts and one of his major projects was the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena.

He directed and was commissioned to conduct the architectural design of the space designed to give prominence to the site, which is a late Roman necropolis.

After his death in February 2013, his heirs decided to donate all his professional legacy to the General Archive of the Region of Murcia, working since then in its documentation and dissemination.

The photographs gathered in 'Another look of Pedro San Martin.

Photographs 1954-1958 'can be watch in the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena until January 10th at the following times: Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 14.00.
