Three graduates UPCT designed a prototype electric bicycle to the university, which wants to have seven more (23/07/2015)

The focus of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) sustainable mobility intensifies.

Electric bikes were for ETSII and the Department of Infrastructure and Sustainability, then came the transformation project of a buggy in electric vehicles, and are now beginning to receive the first electric bicycles UPCT first.

Three graduates of the School of Industrial Engineering in the specialties of mechanics and electronics are designed and built a prototype electric bicycle to the university, which continues to advance its sustainable mobility plan to equip the various centers of the institution of a vehicle of this type, which in total would count with 7 pedal-assist bicycles.

Sergio Lopez, Pedro Martinez and Juan Pedro Ortega.

So they called the architects of the electric bicycle.

Although everyone works in a company in the region, they confess that his dream is to start a business and focus on marketing these vehicles.

For now they do so through the brand 'On-eBike' and his first customer was the Vice President for Infrastructure, Equipment and Sustainability.

The prototype is designed fully collapsible, its wheels are 20 inches, has 5 levels of assistance, ranging from low to high need for momentum, and the battery has a range of over 40 kilometers.

After the participation of these three engineers in the design and manufacture of two cars and an electric bike for international competitions, Sergio says: "From the project Smart City, which was a competition in which he participated in a timely manner, we looked capable of creating any type of electric vehicle, so it began, "turn his companion, Pedro Martinez, adding that" it has been a year full of difficulties. "

For both, the biggest problem we have had throughout the process of designing and developing electric bicycle has been "of suppliers, when you rely on yourself, you invest the time to meet deadlines, but when you depend on other companies always deadlines are much delayed and the project is extended. "

The first charging point in ELDI

The vice president of Infrastructure, Equipment and Sustainability, Jose Perez, says that the idea of electric bikes is part of the sustainable mobility program being developed by the institution.

In fact, in a few weeks, the Building Research Laboratories (ELDI) have a first integrated charging point for electric vehicles.

It will be an installation in which the charging will be powered by solar panels and has received a grant of 5,375 euros by the Directorate General of Industry of the CARM.

"As part of this project, we contacted this team of graduates our and found the best choice to design a bike from scratch with them, so they were commissioned to do a prototype, with the idea of subsequently making a short run to assign a each center so that management teams, or any other member of the university community can move clean, efficient and healthy way, "says Perez.

Also, within the same initiative to enhance sustainable mobility college he presented the City of Cartagena college project cycle path through the professor of the School of Roads, Pilar Jimenez, and hope that "the city does actually offer to participate in the development of the Master Plan of the city bike path, to promote the development of the ring that connects the university buildings ".
