Cartagena celebrates International Day of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (12/05/2015)

The Association of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and District of Cartagena this morning commemorated the International Day of these diseases twelfth reading the manifesto, read by the president of the association, Toni Diaz Delgado at the door of the Regional Assembly. The Mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro and the councilman of Social Care, Antonio Calderon attended a sign of support.

During the reading of the manifesto, the president, representing AFIBROCAR, explained the misunderstanding that feel as sick.

He also highlighted the social service that has the association but they need to be supported by concrete actions and involvement in society.

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are the two diseases in which pain and fatigue are the protagonists of their lives, something they have to live.

AFIBROCAR, like other associations, it aims to be recognized as ill and may have treatment to help them have a better quality of life.

The association is established since 2001, and is comprised of over 300 partners. AFIBROCAR has various means, thanks to the monthly partner or aid bodies such as the Regional Assembly, the City of Cartagena and the Autonomous Community, which help them to propose an alternative treatment in the event that the drug does not work, yoga workshops, dance therapy, stretching, Nordic walking, spa sessions, physiotherapy, psychology, etc., as explained by the president of the Association .

For this reason, the association has highlighted the main needs to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Among these needs, Toni Diaz, president of AFIBROCAR mentioned:

-the Recognition of the disease by professionals, institutions, social partners and society in general.

-The Research for better diagnosis, treatment and early detection.

-The Improvement of health care and the establishment of unified protocols that ensure equal quality and accessibility to resources and services of the Public Health System.

-Access To work, either through the adaptation of jobs, either through new forms of employment.

-The Fair social benefits when the severity of the disease is not allowed to work.

Throughout the day they have developed different information tables in different locations as the Regional Assembly, The English Court, St. Lucia University Hospital and the University Hospital Virgen del Rosell, Saint Vincent Health Center, Office of Barrio de la Concepción, the Health Centre Puerto de Mazarrón and Health Center Mazarrón, where anyone interested can come to inquire about AFIBROCAR.

What is fibromyalgia?

It is an alteration of the sensory system and causes persistent pain as a symptom in different areas of our body, sadness, urinary and vascular unrefreshing sleep, depression, anxiety, cognitive problems, intestinal disorders or.

It also manifests with muscular stiffness, exhaustion and fatigue.

Fibromyalgia is one of the most representative situations of chronic pain in the population and one of the most current health problems in developing countries.

This is because it is a chronic condition with high prevalence, estimated in the Spanish general population by 2.4% (4.3% in women and 0.8% for men), quality of life largely affected especially in the areas of physical function, mental activity and emotional status, and quality of sleep, which form a significant influence on the ability to work, family and social role.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Also known as systemic disease exercise intolerance, it presents a wide and diverse symptomatic and intense physical and mental fatigue that does not improve with rest and worsens with any type of activity.

Between 350 and 430 per 100,000 people affected, and way more common in women.
