A thesis UPCT raises the need for satellite monitoring Basin Field of Cartagena (12/05/2015)

"With satellite monitoring Basin Field of Cartagena could predict droughts."

This is one of the main conclusions that the doctoral student has arrived at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), Johannes Hunink, in his thesis entitled 'Estimating the water balance of the basin of Campo de Cartagena using hydrological modeling and remote sensing' .

Hunink presented the findings of their study on 4th Workshop on Agri-Food Research has organized college and has done accompanied by the professor in agroforestry engineering, Alain Baille, who has directed the thesis today.

"The satellite images that would allow us to determine the evapotranspiration and meet water losses and in what areas are", said Baille.

According to the university professor, to track a watershed satellite, you can meet more precisely the balance between supply and demand, and predict a drought "and would generate a kind of early warning to the affected farmers and to make decisions. "

The aim of this study is to inform the community of irrigators and the Segura basin for better management of water contributions.

The thesis has focused on the Cuenca del Campo de Cartagena, where researchers have found that agricultural activities "are exerting major pressure on water resources that are available in the area", but there is sufficient margin to reach a sustainable situation if you begin to consider the connections between surface hydrology and the different aquifers, the underground resource to include as an integral element in the management of water resources.

They have also stated that "it must have a space vision to determine affected areas may have more problems in the future and there are areas of Cartagena who consume more water than others and this would help to have a more sustainable long term."

The study was also based on a request from the European Union which calls for monitoring water use in areas 'stressed' as Murcia.

Once it is estimated what is the impact of tourism, industry or irrigation on groundwater, "could achieve a more sustainable use of water and provide times of drought," they add.
