The Municipal Archives exposes the Cartagena Soņada (12/05/2015)

You can visit throughout the month of May |

The Cartagena Soņada.

Urban and architectural projects that were never executed (1791? -1926), Is the name of the exhibition that throughout the month of May, can be visited at the Municipal Archives, located in the Artillery.

The exhibition includes drawings and sketches of works planned for Cartagena, but that did not materialize in the streets, since not all urban and architectural projects that once were studied at City Hall and were approved, came running.

Most of these failed projects are developments or additions to the large expansion project designed in 1896, at the height of a brilliant stage of economic development, on the grounds of Almarjal.

It is a moment of euphoria in which ambitious plans for reform and improvement of the city are conceived, but that soon gives way to concerns about the emergence of increasingly clear that prosperity was ending symptoms.

With the new century, and in an economic environment increasingly less favorable, some of the great works projected could come to fruition, but others remained on paper.

An example of these unsuccessful projects is the large park that should occupy the center of the Eixample, with additional works should make it more attractive and useful, as the casino, kiosks, the shade house, hothouse, etc.

In this area large public buildings the city needed were also screened.

Without building they were left prison, the barracks of the Civil Guard and the monumental building Institute and Industrial School.

So did special projects such as the great school of San Ignacio de Loyola.

Outside the Eixample was no shortage without running projects: fish, Monument to Peral, resort of Cabo de Palos ... and the great urban reform of the waterfront and mount that dominates Concepcion.

Adding two unrealized projects of different times to the town hall.

The first of the late eighteenth century (another moment of crisis after a period of economic boom) and the second a sketch of the sixties of the nineteenth century, it was finally scrapped.

Visiting hours for this exhibition will be open to the public file. Mornings from Monday to Friday from 9 to 13.30. Evenings Tuesday and Wednesday from 17 to 19.30. It will also be open on Saturday 16 May on the occasion of the Museum Night from 20.00 to 2.00 hours.
