An FAO expert recommends to value indigenous foods to preserve them (11/05/2015)

With this message, the FAO expert Jorge Fonseca today defended at the School of Agricultural UPCT differentiating local products to preserve the genetic diversity of food and "not rely on a few seed producers".

"We need the agricultural researchers to value the advantages of local products and you need to think not only in monetary terms but also take into account social and environmental impacts," said Fonseca.

"We are losing genetic diversity on a large scale and we know the nutritional consequences that will occur," he added.

Fonseca, expert from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, gave a conference on measures to prevent food waste on 4th Workshop Agrifood Research UPCT.

FAO estimates that the food that is lost or wasted during the production, distribution and consumption come to assume in the world up to 70% of those who are consumed.

Fonseca has praised the researchers from the School of Agronomy.
