The Polytechnic presents the Seismic microzonation of Lorca on the anniversary of the earthquake (05/05/2015)

The seven research teams from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) who have done pioneering Seismic microzonation study of Lorca, the first at the municipal level is done in Spain, present their findings, along with the Department of Development and Public Works Planning, promoter of the project, on Monday May 11, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the tragic earthquake in the auditorium of the University Campus of Lorca.

The presentation of the results will be made jointly with the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Planning, promoter of the study, the first at the municipal level is done in Spain.

Will take place on Monday, May 11, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the tragic earthquake in the city of Lorca, in the auditorium of the University Campus.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Jose Antonio Franco, and the Minister of Development, Public Works and Planning, Francisco Barnabas, inaugurated this technical day at 9.30 am.

The study, which involved many researchers UPCT teams from seven schools and Mines Road and architecture and building, along with other experts of national prestige, has covered the areas of: the Neotectonics, geophysics Seismic Engineering, Geotechnics, Structures, Building and Construction, as well as GIS and land use patterns.

"The primary objectives were to know what kind of earthquakes may suffer the city, which may affect more areas and what type of structures are most appropriate in each area to reduce risks," says Emilio Trigueros, project coordinator.

Together with researchers at the UPCT Rafael Blazquez, Pedro Martinez, Manuel Alcaraz, Carlos Parra and Antonio Thomas, Thomas Rodriguez, Emilio Trigueros and Mary Hausen, the day will also be involved experts from the National Geographic Institute of the University of Almeria and the Polytechnic Valencia, the CETEC, the City of Lorca and the DGs of Planning and Architecture, Housing and Land in the Autonomous Region of Murcia.

This Conference is aimed at all professionals who are related to the world of construction and urban planning.

"We have no choice but to learn to live with a phenomenon, seismic, repeated over time.

In the last 100 years the strip running from Almeria to Alicante has received more than 60 quakes above 5 intensity, and that will remain so, "says Trigueros.

"As our region one of the three national areas of high seismic activity, have taken an important step towards a group of indigenous work in the field of earthquake engineering," he adds.

To register for the conference, which is free, you can send an email to the vicplan@upct.es address with the subject 'Day in Lorca'.
