Health asks Cuatro Gatos management plan feline colonies (30/04/2015)

The Department of Health of the City of Cartagena has asked the association Cuatro Gatos developing a management plan of the five colonies of cats that were authorized in the Old Town in December 2012. The plan shall contain information on the situation and as the sanitary measures undertaken to prevent infectious outbreaks or inconvenience to local residents.

In the letter addressed to the association, the Council agreement reached in 2012, for which the City Council will authorize the deployment and management of five colonies of cats in areas of El Molinete, Monte Sacro, Cerro de la Concepción refers Cerro de San José and Cerro de Despeñaperros, on which the association would assume a series of commitments control over them.

City Hall also is based on the Order dated June 25, 2013 of the Ministries of Water and Health and Social Policy, for the control and eradication of rabies in animals and prevention of risks to public health, which warns the impossibility of maintaining urban neighborhoods for canine, feline and mustélidas species without the existence of a management plan on the part of those responsible.

This Management Plan Four Cats must be delivered within a month it must be drafted by a veterinarian trained in feline medicine and population management experience in urban neighborhoods, which shall assume the functions of management, veterinary care and supervision the maintenance of these.

The Plan shall include a description of each colony authorized (extent, location and boundaries, the number of individuals who compose and population control measures, etc.);

sanitary control animals shall be identified, vaccinated, wormed, sterilized without communicable diseases) sanitary measures, covering the cleaning and disinfection of occupied spaces; support indicating the places where they are given to eat and cleaning;

and road and public safety to prevent nuisance to neighbors and passersby.

The Department of Health has rejected this measure, imposed by regional standards, want to carry out an extermination of the colonies of cats, such as from various media and social networks has accused the association Cuatro Gatos, and has ensured that five colonies authorized may continue to operate, subject to compliance with appropriate health and hygiene guarantees.
