Researchers collaborate with EXPAL UPCT developing technologies to make new propellants (22/04/2015)

Three research groups from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) collaborated with R & D and Technology Company EXPAL in economic and environmental optimization of intelligent manufacturing processes at its factory in Javalí Viejo (Murcia) and the development of new products as for recreational and military and propulsion devices broader applications.

The collaboration of researchers from departments UPCT Thermal and Fluids Engineering, Systems Engineering and Automation and Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, started in 2011, has been framed in the Smart Propellants project (IPT-2011-0712 -020 000) within the sub INNPACTO 2011, with a total budget of € 2,306,361.50, which has been funded by the Ministry of Economy and Finance with FEDER funds.

The objectives of the project are the development of gunpowder for recreational applications, propellants for rockets and recycling of energy products from the demilitarization of ammunition.

The technologies involved cover the entire production cycle of the powders, from design and development, industrial production process control and management of manufacturing facilities and testing for verification of their benefits and job security .

Research results

Specifically, "has developed a tool that will allow the company to reduce the number of its ballistic laboratory experiments to select the most suitable type of propellant" exemplifies the faculty of the Department of Thermal Engineering and Fluid José Ramón García Cascales.

Among the improvements made by researchers from the Department of Systems Engineering and Automation highlights the control software, data integration and processing plant with a system of industrial wireless communications, "ensuring traceability and real-time communicating processes scattered throughout the various facilities of the factory, "adds Professor Antonio Guerrero.

Meanwhile, teachers of Engineering Materials and Manufacturing contributed to the improvement of production processes such as kneading, and drying the extruded acting on the machinery involved.

"The mechanical behavior of the product involves the experimental study at the factory, analyzing data from different machines and numerical simulation of these processes in a program parameter optimization," explains researcher Patricio Franco.

Javier Ramirez, director of R & D and Technology EXPAL and project coordinator, said that with the support of groups Cartagena Polytechnic "have developed a new range of propellants, completed environmental legislation REACH, which allows us to position ourselves new products in the markets of recreational pyrotechnics and defense. "

EXPAL develops and manufactures products and services for defense and security sectors, highlighting its offer in powders and propellants.

EXPAL heads the business unit MAXAM defense, industrial and services group global scale that develops, manufactures and markets products and services blasting and initiation systems for mining, quarrying and infrastructure;

cartridges and gunpowder for hunting and sports use;

and products and services for the defense industry.

MAXAM was founded by Alfred Nobel in 1872 and has more than 6,500 employees.
