Two new laboratories of the Polytechnic help study the safety of civil engineering (18/03/2015)

The UPCT premieres equipment, unique in the Southeast, to test the resistance of large metal and concrete pieces to make the safest works and a hydrodynamic channel to play erosion suffering bridges and dams

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has launched today with the visit of the Minister of Education, Culture and Universities, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, the new pointer and equipping of two laboratories ELDI building that the Lead in Spain imparted to the degree in Civil Engineering and Master of Engineering in Civil and Ports teaching.

With the new equipment the researchers tested the resistance of large pieces of metal and concrete intended for civil construction and, moreover, played phenomena such as erosion and sedimentation to see how they affect the waterworks.

In the new laboratory construction and relocation of the Laboratory of Hydraulic Engineering and the acquisition of a towing tank have invested more than 370,000 euros from own funds UPCT aid of the Autonomous Community and funds Ministry of Economy and Finance ERDF project within UPCA09-2C-226 'Heavy Construction Building Research Laboratories (ELDI).

Phase II ', which received funding totaling three million euros.

Essays saving iron

Researchers from the Department of Structures and Building and Civil Engineering Department of Industrial and schools Roads and Mines of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) have already started research projects and technology transfer to companies with powerful Construction equipment Lab.

Companies in the construction industry and civil works have already asked the Polytechnic resistance tests on their metal or concrete products in both loading gantry with which the laboratory is equipped with actuators capable of achieving up to 50 and 100 tons of compression and to traction 30 and 70, respectively.

"Most companies are not prepared for this type of testing and the Polytechnic which supplies us and solves the studies and tests we can not do," said Felipe Vilas, director of Engineering Relesa.

"This type of equipment is not feasible for companies like ours and in the Region of Murcia and throughout Southeast Spain no other laboratory that offers us these benefits," he adds.

The Spanish company has already tested in the laboratory their welded gratings for civil works, made in Fuente Álamo and designed to withstand up landing a Boeing 747. "We compete on the international market and we need to know if there is room to optimize materials and cheaper the product, "said Vilas, alumnus UPCT.

"These tests are going to realize the many kilos of iron that can be saved," said one of the researchers at the Polytechnic who perform the tests.

Formulas that are designed dams

Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory UPCT just added to its powerful infrastructure hydrodynamic channel forty feet to study different transcendental phenomena for hydraulic engineering and energy dissipation under the dam;

scour produced in bridge piers;

sediment transport in the river and erosion generating or transmission of waves on bursting of a dam.

The Laboratory led by Luis Castillo also has infrastructure that reproduce the waterfalls in dams for the study of turbulent jets and bowls dissipation hydropower facilities to test high uptake systems in semi-arid and cameras that capture images Speed to measure oxygen diffusion in a channel with two-phase flow as part of a project with Hidrogea and Esamur to minimize odors from the sewer.

Hydraulic researchers UPCT Currently in draft National Plan of coordinated research between the UPV (Polytechnic University of Valencia), UPCT and CEDEX (Center for Experimentation of Public Works of the Ministry of Public Works) 'emulsifies' on energy dissipation in aerated flows and technology transfers made to Hidrogea and CELEC EP Esamur and building the dam and reservoir Advertise-Cardenillo in Ecuador.

Recently, the technical manual for the Federal Emergency Management Agency US included several formulations developed in the Laboratory of Hydraulics UPCT.

Researchers are also designing spillways of dams in Ecuador.
