The City will use social media to avoid rumors about immigration (07/11/2014)

The City of Cartagena, as part of its management of diversity as richness in the territory, was launched to promote a strategy to counter the negative rumors that are usually created in the field of immigration and cultural diversity in Overall, it can lead to prejudice and stereotypes set thinning coexistence and create hostile attitudes.

Such a strategy, working in a coordinated several Councillors, is to use social networks and information channels to combat rumors and unfounded prejudices, giving instead an accurate and authoritative information on immigration.

This is going to identify and analyze the negative stereotypes that usually circulate around this issue and often channeled and disseminated through rumors that reinforce unfavorable attitudes towards cultural diversity and to certain groups.

In this sense, the idea is to launch several actions including the creation of an anti-rumor citizen network, a communication campaign, training of agents and anti-rumor awareness raising events.

As a first step in this initiative, the coordinator of the anti-rumor project and diversity expert, Council of Europe, Gemma Pinyol, which was received by the Councillor of Greater Social Care, Antonio Calderon, met Monday with department heads and Technical Councils of Social Services, Youth, Sports, Education, Women and the Agency for Local Development and Employment, in order to explain the methodology of this project and the path thereof.

This initiative was first established in 2010 in the city of Barcelona, ​​and after being submitted to the Open Society Foundations spread to the cities of Sabadell, Getxo, Fuenlabrada and the island of Tenerife.

All of them, like Cartagena, members of the Network of Intercultural Cities of Spain cities.

(RECI), linked to the European network intercultural cities, a program promoted by the Council of Europe.

The impact it has had this strategy both locally and internationally has highlighted the importance of addressing this reality from the municipal level from innovative approaches and methodologies, to which wants to join the city of Cartagena.
