The UPCT emphasizes safe handling of chemicals (28/04/2014)

Over 1,200 liters of chemical waste from the teaching labs and research have been sent in the last year to a treatment plant in the region.

The Vice President for Infrastructure, Equipment and Sustainability remembered today, World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the importance of handling and managing hazardous waste generated at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), an institution classified as a small producer residues.

The theme this year is "Safety and health in the use of chemicals."

The José Pérez, Vice Chancellor recalls the importance of safe driving as prevention of occupational accidents and diseases.

Pesticides, reagents, acidic and basic solutions, halogenated and non-halogenated organic solvents and water laboratory waste are generated by university community.

The withdrawal is managed by the Service for the Prevention of Occupational Risks.

The production of these chemicals, originates in many different teaching and research laboratories.

Once generated the same withdrawal to the Service of Occupational Risks UPCT requested.

The ILO (International Labour Organization) has produced a report which shows that although the chemicals may be useful, it is necessary to adopt measures to prevent and keep under control the potential risks to workers, workplaces and environment.

The Service Occupational Hazards remember that chemicals are essential to modern life, and continue to be produced and used in the workplace.

The ILO recognizes that requires the sound management of chemicals to achieve a suitable balance between the benefits of the use of chemicals and the prevention and control of potential adverse impacts on workers, the workplace, the communities and the environment.

This can be achieved with concrete actions and coordinated efforts of governments, employers and workers and their organizations.
