The UPCT, ranking tenth in the Spanish Public Universities (23/12/2013)

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) ranks tenth Global Ranking of the Spanish Universities, conducted by the University of Valencia and just published by the Institute of Education Sciences at the University of Oviedo.

Is an improvement on the eleventh position in which it appeared in 2008.

In this paper we consider the three facets of university research, teaching and involvement with society, attributing equal importance to each and measures the overall quality and academic excellence.

The rector of the UPCT Jose Antonio Franco, expressed his satisfaction at this result and congratulated the team UPCT by the effort made in their teaching and research tasks.

Franco notes that this result is good news as it adds to MetaRanking EC3 Spanish Universities, which has just published its 2013 edition, and in the Polytechnic University of Cartagena appears as the third university in Spanish architecture and among the top ten in the scientific discipline of Telecommunications.

Internationally, occupies position 127 according to the Normalized Impact of its research output according to Scimago Institutions Rankings of Universities.

Regarding the categorical classification of the six variables considered for public universities and the rate of total quality UPCT achieved 64 of the 84 possible points in this new Global Ranking of Spanish Universities.

In this section, aspects such as the number of theses on the number of teachers, proportion of income from private sources to total income ratio of R & D from private sources on total R & D, or index are valued number of teachers on enrollment, among others.

In the area UPCT achieves excellent rating in the index is the number of dropouts on enrollment.

The new ranking teachers have developed Beamonte Eduardo, Alejandro and Ernesto Jesus Casino Veres, University of Valencia, and just published in the journal 'Open Classroom', Institute of Education Sciences at the University of Oviedo.

Methodology

The ranking reflects the situation of Spanish universities in 2010.

The data used by the study are objective indicators of public and official sources.

Researchers turn to external sources to the universities themselves, as the study of 'The University in Figures', prepared annually by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), the assessments carried out by the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity, or database of doctoral theses Theseus, the Ministry of Education.

The study also includes a comparison with other relevant university rankings, such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of Shanghai, the newspaper El Mundo or in Webometrics, developed by the CSIC, among others, and concluded that none of these rankings' has the global nature of the here proposed.
