Fishermen Anse Cartagena and ask for compliance on diving in the reserve of Cabo de Palos (12/12/2013)

The Fishermen of Cartagena and the Association of Southeast Naturalists have sent a letter to the Ministry of Agriculture and Water asking for compliance on the only diving marine reserve fishing interest of the Region of Murcia, Cabo de Palos-Islas Ants (Cartagena).

The exceptional environmental conditions of Cabo de Palos-Islas Ants and their environment, coupled with the protective measures taken since 1995 have allowed the recovery of wildlife populations and in few places, which has made the area one of the most attractive diving destinations in the Mediterranean, with a major impact on tourism, both in the creation of centers and dive companies and hotel occupancy and hotel industry.

Cabo de Palos-Islas Ants concentrated approximately half yearly divers plunge into the coastline of the Region.

Although the number of authorized divers was regulated by Order of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water in July 2001, there is no adequate monitoring to ensure compliance with the established limits (maximum of 75 divers per day in high season and 37 in low season ) figures amply exceed the same as acknowledged Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, especially in summer.

This high pressure diving, especially in high season, could pose negative effects to the Reserve, as recognized by researchers at the University of Murcia in tracer studies for the region.

The same Director General of Livestock and Fisheries of the Region of Murcia few months ago recognized the need to regulate this activity to the overcrowding in high season, but has not advanced anything about it, while patrolling the reserve account with less means.

The Fishermen of Cartagena and Anse consider the region and the state should resume the Monitoring Committee of the Reserve, as an organ of participation in the different sectors involved in the conservation and management of the area aware of the plans and programs of the government responsible for the management, and they can make suggestions, review and participate in the various aspects related to the management and regulation of uses of the Reserve.

Both companies are convinced that the Ministry of Agriculture and Water and dive businesses share the need to avoid overcrowding of this activity in the area of the reservation, and hope that the necessary measures are taken to ensure compliance with the rules is made effective in 2014.
