Statement in relation to the serious situation of uncertainty about the public university system (30/07/2013)

Given the serious situation of uncertainty about the public university system generated by the latest decisions of the governments of Spain and the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (CARM), the Government Councils of public universities in the region have agreed manifest the following terms:

Public universities in the region have followed a policy of rigor, restraint and austerity in spending, through the efforts of its employees, to meet its social commitment to promote excellence in its training activities, research and development and transfer of knowledge and technology in the areas of interest to our region.

It is essential that the public university system have an adequate budget to be able to continue to perform its functions effectively and with appropriate quality level, having reached a situation in which new financial cuts would prevent the maintenance of essential activities.

They oppose the policy of scholarships and student aid materialized by the Royal Decree Project Scholarship presented by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, which does not guarantee a public university education accessible to all citizens, regardless of their economic resources.

The application of the new academic requirements, along with changing economic allocation model, can lead to exclusion and deterrent effect of numerous students, both for access and continuation in the university.

Protest paralyzing the careers of research and teaching, as well as the rest of the squad, truncating not only legitimate aspirations, but also generating a deadlock in tissue replacement level teaching and research, placing themselves in grave endanger the maintenance of an essential public service.

They express their rejection of the CARM Act 4/2013, of June 12, on Urgent Measures on Personal Expenses and Administrative Organization, which is being placed on the wages of all workers in the service of the Public Administration Regional, including universities, government budgetary violations in the region, with a further reduction of remuneration which leads to a loss of purchasing power accumulated in the last six years more than 20 percentage points.
