The CHS recovery begin in January of the Rambla de Peñas Blancas in Cartagena (27/12/2012)

The Segura basin (CHS) will begin the middle of next month January reclamation works of the Rambla de Peñas Blancas, in Cartagena, which will last until July and will involve an investment of 807,000 euros, financed by the European Regional Development Fund (Feder).

The performance will run on a stretch of 9.4 kilometers from the deputation of Corona to Los Barreros, crossing Marfagones Mills upstream from the intersection with Benipila Rambla, one of the main channels of the municipality of Cartagena.

Works stabilization and erosion control of that channel to be launched by the basin organization include the elimination of accumulated waste, environmental improvement and landscape of the area, environmental revegetation and adequacy of space for recreational activities.

Brake erosion and improving drainage capacity

La Rambla de Peñas Blancas undergoes a process of slope instability and reduces inert reservoir drainage capacity and compromises in case of floods, both by the collapse of banks and by the drag of obstacles.

Its layout is so huge and highly sinuous meanders nearly 100 meters wide, which is combined with stretches where the channel has little depth.

For stabilization of slopes and erosion brake is placed breakwaters (stone reinforcements) and gabions (similar to the jetties, but with a mesh containment), while non-depressed areas of environmental importance will be padded with the original material from the coastline.

The cleaning of waste bed and slope of the Rambla de Peñas Blancas will primarily manually, although in areas close to urban centers, where the discharge is concentrated deposits will require the use of machinery.

In these areas Notice boards and ban the dumping of rubbish and debris to raise awareness of the benefits of having a clean promenade and to the condition of the runway last.

Environmental restoration and recreational use

Environmental restoration and revegetation will be undertaken selectively and with native species.

Previously remove invasive non-native vegetation.

Improved drainage on preparation of various areas of ponds and lagoons exploiting natural ponds, so that water accumulates elsewhere there against undesirable for reasons of health.

To contribute to the social integration of the boulevard, the CHS also will adapt a footpath between the two ends of the village of Molino Marfagones and placed several items for the practice of outdoor exercise.
