RECYCLING NUMBERS GROW

As pointed out by the responsible Ecoembes, recycling figures in Cartagena have been growing in recent years and the level of awareness and has been attributed to the desire of citizens to recycle that sometimes are placed in plastic waste containers not correspond.

Environment Councillor pointed out that this system was introduced in 2001 and since then, the city of Cartagena facilitates population and yellow containers to deposit respectively blue light packaging (plastic, cans and cartons) and cartons and paper.

Moreover, they also facilitate igloo containers, green, for the collection of glass.

Palazón Carolina also explained that daily management company removed the waste using a collection of four models independent.

The residues removed are delivered to various managers for further treatment, according to their nature:

Waste paper and cardboard are taken to the waste treatment plant in Cartagena that picks up and delivers to an authorized agent; lightweight containers are delivered to the company ECOEMBES SA in its treatment plant in Murcia, and the glass is carried Caudete plant in Valencia.

The evolution of the volume of recycling has been growing:

Just off the 107 tonnes of lightweight containers that were collected in 2001, in 2011 it reached the 2484 tons.

Cardboard paper has come from 1822 tonnes in 2001, the 3758, 2011, and in glass, from 1026 tonnes in 2001, to 2555 in 2011.

Altogether during these 11 years have collected 22,626 tons of glass, cardboard paper 39,205, and 21,279 containers.

The causes of the increase of separate collection are in the opinion of the Councillor in:

- Increased information campaigns, as well as a better awareness.

- Increase the available containers in public, having at present 1343 light yellow packaging, 920 blue paper cardboard and 900 igloos.

This is a yellow container per 160 inhabitants, a cardboard container for every 240 inhabitants, and a glass container for every 244 inhabitants.

In all cases, the improvement Cartagena national average of one container per 270 inhabitants.

- Increased collection areas.

- Greater control of the waste deposited in different containers.

UNFIT INCREASE

In the case of light packaging in recent years this positive development has been linked to an increase in the improper, ie plastic waste but not light packaging, which currently revolves around 23 percent.

Clothing, toys and household items, the main intrusion in the yellow containers, according to data from the sampling Ecoembes conducted in early 2012 in the municipality of Cartagena, analyzing the trash that is disposed in the yellow light packaging containers.

This sample shows the high percentage of clothing and textile inappropriately throws the yellow containers, followed by non-packaging plastics such as toys, household items (bowls, buckets, trays), beach items (mattresses, chairs cubes), plastic parts of automobiles and appliances, blinds, tapers, which occur very frequently between materials depositados.Todo this led the City Council and Ecoembes, in collaboration Federation of Neighborhood Associations, to prepare this campaign which will focus on the materials to be deposited in the yellow containers, containers exclusively, reviewing, in turn, that all containers are properly screen printed with the message you have to shoot at each (Rest, Only plastic bottles, cans and cartons, and cartons only role, and the same for others, such as clothing or oil).

For his part, President of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations, Leandro Sanchez, expressed his concern and interest in the topic of recycling in general and recalled the commitment of the federation when in 2001 this system was implemented and worked with conducting talks and yellow cubes sharing among neighbors.
