The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport completes the restoration of the Cathedral of Cartagena (15/06/2012)

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, through the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE) has completed the restoration of the Cathedral of Santa María la Vieja (Cartagena), also known as the Old Cathedral.

The investment of the restoration of the cathedral, begun in May 2011, has been a total of € 252,199.71.

In this restoration project, the EICP has developed a comprehensive historical research, extensive archaeological work and basic actions to consolidate the items that remain standing.

This has provided a better understanding of the building, making it possible to guide the works carried out to integrate the temple in the archaeological and cultural complex which is near the Roman Theatre in Cartagena, while enabling future retrieval as a place of worship.
