ARQUA pays tribute to Julio Mas, first director of the Museum and Submarine Archaeological Research Centre (14/06/2012)

The National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, ARQUA, held Friday, June 15 to July homage More (1921-2011), who was first director of the Museum and Submarine Archaeological Research Center in a ceremony to be held at 19.30 pm in the auditorium of the Museum, and to be attended by the Councillor for Culture, Rosario Montero.

During the tribute, the successors of Mas proceed with the donation to the Museum archive and personal library, consisting of 2,286 books and more than 6,200 documents and photos.

In 1972, after convincing that underwater archeology was a profession, created the Underwater Archaeological Research Center, which was established since then, a normative basis, some technical and infrastructures.

Thanks to his perseverance, he managed to summon the will.

The Ministry of Culture put human and economic resources, the Navy gave some old facilities in Dock Christmas and made available to the dive center staff, the Port of Cartagena gave him the old leper colony, and finally, the City and the Archaeological Museum joined in a collaboration that enabled the creation of the Museum and National Center for Underwater Archaeological Research, which was the embryo of the current ARQUA.

In this process, Julio Mas goes beyond the simple recovery of objects from the seabed, making it necessary specialists.

Therefore, integrated into their work to a group of young archaeologists, especially at the Autonomous University of Madrid, ensuring continuity of the institution he created.

But the legacy is now completed with the donation of his archives and his personal library to the museum ARQUA.

One hundred and twenty files, containing six hundred folders that appear ordered over six and seven hundred papers in 1200 photographs are irreplaceable documentation for both the knowledge of the management of underwater archeology and the history of navigation through the numerous sites who excavated.

The grant, continued by his children, complete with nearly 2300 books.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, through the museum ARQUA, becomes in this way depository of this heritage with a commitment to make it available to scholars and researchers.
