Cartagena's population stagnates by the exodus of immigrants (10/05/2012)

The Bureau of Statistics and Population of the City of Cartagena has published population data to January 1, 2012, date on which it reached a total of 217,998 inhabitants, 212 less than the previous year, showing, for the first time, a declining population in the municipality.

This decline is due largely to the exodus of foreigners, mainly immigrants, during the past year.

According to the census, 1,373 no longer reside in the municipality, ranking earlier this year at 30,775, compared with 32,148, which had a January 1, 2011.

However, the positive natural increase of population and the arrival of Spanish from other municipalities, has cushioned the loss of population.

Another significant finding, contrary to what had been happening until 2003, is that men are beating women in number, 110,032 versus 107,966, which is mainly reflected in the foreign population, which accounted for 17,940 men compared to 12,835 women.

For districts, the highest concentration of population occurs in the Town of Cartagena and the Eixample area , with 61,610 inhabitants, followed by the councils of St. Anthony , with 44,728, and The Plan , with 35,790.

At the other end of the scale, with less than 1,500 inhabitants, are Miranda , The Hondón , Campo Nubla , Physicians and tailings , which has only 5 inhabitants.

As for foreigners, mainly immigrants, shows his preference for settling in the downtown area, with 8,382 inhabitants, the San Anton, with 4,975, and the Rincon de San Gines, where they are located 3,497 mainly British.
