Cartagena, Spain sustainable city (01/12/2011)

The Town Planning and Environment and Infrastructure, have gathered today in Barcelona the award given by the Environmental Forum Foundation, and distinguishes the city for its project from the old town pedestrian

The Environmental Forum Foundation has awarded the prize to Cartagena city sustainable by the historic pedestrian, for their commitment to revitalize downtown by transforming itself into a space that favors the pedestrian, bicycle and public transport .

The decision was made ​​public this morning at the World Congress on Intelligent Cities held in the Feria de Barcelona which was attended by the Town Planning and Environment, Joaquin Segado, and infrastructure, Francisco Espejo, who received the award on behalf of the City.

Segado thanked the award explaining that Cartagena has made ​​a comprehensive work to transform the old town in an historic and attractive pedestrian dedicated to urban tourism and heritage has become a new economy line for Cartagena.

The councilman pointed out that this work has been accompanied by a process of modernization of public transport, creating six new bus lines and cutting by half the maximum waiting at the bus stop users.

The jury in the ninth edition of the award by representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities, the regional governments of Catalonia, Andalusia and the Canary Islands and the municipalities of Madrid and Barcelona, ​​praised the pioneering role of Cartagena Loan services such as bicycle, creating a network of cycle paths and the implementation of car sharing platforms and parking.

Mowing has used his speech during the event to highlight the efforts made ​​by the municipality regarding recycling of waste, especially in water-saving policies, with large investments that have minimized the losses in distribution and have Cartagena made among the first cities in the reuse of water, with 95% of debugging.

The Environmental Forum Foundation is a nonprofit entity whose main objective is to create a platform for dialogue and collaboration between businesses, administrations and the rest of society, to achieve and implement jointly a more sustainable development model that the current .

The award is more sustainable city of the seven top prize awarded by the Foundation for nine years.
