The Ministry of Culture restored the Old Cathedral of Cartagena (05/05/2011)

The Government delegate, Rafael González Tovar, announced that the Ministry of Culture will start the restoration of the Old Cathedral of Cartagena.

State Official Bulletin published today in the tendering of the works, aimed at improving the use of the building, promoting conservation and retrieve items that allow a correct reading of its historical and architectural features.

The planned investment is 322,000 euros.

The project, which runs the Department of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture through the IPCE, part of a review of the status of the property.

Among the most important conditions presented by the Cathedral are on the roofs and moisture damage to interior and exterior plants.

The intervention will focus on the restoration of damaged items by the above conditions by using traditional materials and techniques.

The project will also consist of the renovation of facilities associated with the public visit the building, improving accessibility to it and the cult and the recovery of the liturgical use of the three chapels that remain.

The intervention in the above chapels take place, predictably, in a second phase of implementing the restoration.

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, known as the Old Cathedral of Cartagena, is located in the historic city center.

Its construction began in the late thirteenth century, then modified several times.

The most significant reforms occurred in the early twentieth century, after ruining part of the apse and north transept, then rebuilt in Romanesque style.

The temple, which had three naves with chapels and a bell tower was partially destroyed after the Civil War, which covers lost and relevant works of art located within them.

Since 1958 has been made on the site of the cathedral excavations have documented archaeological remains from Roman times, as well as the various construction phases of the temple.

Also the architectural elements of the cathedral has been the subject of specific emergency measures designed to safeguard the property.
