The Community settled in Cartagena 'smart traffic lights' that will reduce up to 20 percent on bus timeout (21/02/2011)

Is scheduled to launch this device in other geographical locations to enhance regional and inter-urban mobility and optimize the fuel consumption of the regional public transport

The Minister of Public Works and Planning, José Ballesta, together with the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, attended today in Cartagena at the beginning of operation of the system of 'intelligent traffic light priority', which will reduce up to 20 percent time waiting for the bus, thanks to the new system developed in the region by the Public Transport Authority (EFA), an organization that brings together the 45 municipalities of the Region of Murcia.

"It is a new measure of support and promotion of passenger transport, which is enhanced compared to the private car through collaboration between regional and local administrations, for which the particular sensitivity of the Municipality of Cartagena has been vital in developing a project help to significantly improve the mobility of the municipality and improve passenger comfort, "said José Ballesta.

Technology 'EBUS' (express-bus) is based on the use of a detector, installed a few meters before the traffic light, which recognizes a bus pass, regulating the traffic to give priority over other vehicles, and indicate the driver via a light signal that the signal is going to be green, which prevents and helps to stop their movement, creating a platform or reserved bus lane 'virtual' for use by public transport vehicles.

According to the Minister, "this is a new device aimed at improving service to the people who use public transportation, which reduces the time needed to perform a path, which may account for up to 20 percent, and the waiting time at stops. Similarly, the traffic light priority device will lead to a fuel consumption optimization of regional public transport, helping to make it more environmentally friendly, sustainable and eco-efficient. "

Implementation in other urban environments

In the case of Cartagena, this system will work initially on a 1.5-kilometer route along which a daily total of 11 buses that serve 2.4 million passengers a year.

As indicated by José Ballesta, "from the Public Transport Authority have planned the launch of this device in other parts of the region's geography, which already are being tested in urban environments, which will improve mobility and provide a real improvement service for nearly 40 million annual passengers using regional bus fleet. "

"The regional government thus responds to citizen demands on public transport, in this case, the commercial speed of buses, thereby improving one of the main indicators of the quality of public transport in a city, rather than a technology like this, which is already a reality in the city of Cartagena, improves significantly, "said the counselor.

"Thus, with the implantation of this device will avoid difficulties in the movement of regional public bus transport service for those specific items that, by the intersection of main roads with other secondary schools, there is a greater concentration of traffic , and thus provide a public transport service with the highest quality for all citizens, "José Ballesta.
