About 300 students participate in the I Olympiad Agrifood is organized in Europe (14/02/2011)

About 300 high school students participate in the I Olympiad Regional Agri-Food and Agro-organized by the School of Agricultural Engineering (ETSIA) of the UPCT.

The purpose of this activity, the first of its kind to be organized in Europe, is to spread the higher teachings which are taught in the Centre and contribute to society about the importance of agri-food sector in the Region of Murcia.

The director of the ETSIA, Alejandro Pérez Pastor, stressed today during the presentation of this initiative, which is necessary for society to know the value of the agri-food sector in Murcia, and that 20% of what they exported Spain comes from the region.

In this sense, the director of the School has emphasized that disclosure of the activities carried out is essential to meeting this goal and noted that more than 2,500 students have participated over the past three years on programs that are conducted at the Experimental Station Agrifood Thomas Ferro.

Two tests

Participants in the Olympics have to do two tests: a multiple-choice test to be held at the School of Agricultural Engineering on 24 February and work, individual or collective, which should be related to the Agricultural Economics and Natural Resources Agrifood Business Economics or Agribusiness Cooperatives as Narciso Arcas, deputy dePromoción and Corporate Relations of ETSIA.

The Organizing Committee will provide two grants of € 1,500 per top-ranked in each event in the 2011/12 academic year are enrolled in one of the two titles offered by the School (Bachelor in Engineering and Gardening and Horticulture Degree in Engineering from Agribusiness).

In addition, shared a prize of 500, 200 and 100 euros for the first, second and third highest ranked student in each test, respectively.

The Director General of Promotion, Management and Educational Innovation, Carlos Romero, said that for the Autonomous these initiatives are critical to promote student interest and raise professional vocations in higher education in agricultural engineering, a priority for the region.

Carlos Romero said that the momentum of this race poses a promising horizon for a sector that represents 10% of the GDP of the Region of Murcia.

In presenting the Olympics also featured the Vice President for Student and University Extension, Francisco Martín.

The Olympics has the support of agricultural organizations and professional associations of Agricultural Engineers and Agricultural Engineers.
