Experts from the University of Alicante will present next Monday UPCT ways of acting against the plague of red palm weevil, the beetle from destroying Egypt's Mediterranean palms. Specialists will participate in a seminar organized by the Parks and Jardines del Ayuntamiento de Cartagena and the School of Agricultural Engineering.

During the seminar, aimed at professionals and university students, Rafael López and Berenice Follana Gueri, researchers at the Ramon Margalef, University of Alicante, will present the evolution of red palm weevil, symptoms to detect the pest and provide guidelines to stop it.

The red palm weevil pest appeared in 2006 in the Region of Murcia, coinciding with the importation of palm trees for landscaping Egyptian resorts of new construction, according to Jesus Ochoa says professor of Plant Production.

Its progress is relentless and still do not know the solution to one hundred percent.

The red palm weevil has already wiped out more than 1,200 copies of palm in Cartagena.

The seminar will begin at 11 am in the Salon de Grados of the School of Agricultural Engineering, located on the campus Alfonso XIII.
