A consortium of UPCT, the Polytechnic of Valencia and Berceo participating this weekend in the Solar Race (29/09/2010)

The Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), together with the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the company Bereco participate this weekend in the Solar Race competition in the form of solar vehicles, an international event organized by the Agency for Energy Management Murcia (Argema) and is held at the Circuito de Cartagena.

The prototype of the UPCT-UPV-Bereco must demonstrate energy efficiency, as the winner of this competition will be the team that consume less energy.

The vehicle with the two technical universities in collaboration with Bereco weighs just under 65 kilograms and is equipped with two solar panels of 18 kg each, says the project's technical director in the UPCT, Professor Antonio Guerrero.

While the vehicle can reach fifty miles per hour, the test is not based on the speed of the prototypes.

Two women's team has two women, a teacher and a student at UPCT, who will be responsible for driving the prototype and will have to enter the cabin, located a few inches off the ground and nearly horizontal.

The Technical University of Cartagena has been responsible for the integration of all elements, as well as propulsion and energy system.

Polytechnic University of Valencia has made the frame and body, while Bereco has provided the solar panels, electric motor and batteries.

Antonio Guerrero stressed that the Solar Race is an educational project that serves to create environmental awareness and highlighted the importance of these international competitions to complement the formal education that students receive.

He has also appreciated the support that has allowed the Chancellor to realize the first participation in this competition UPCT.

For its part, the scientific director of the project, Angel Molina, recalled that in the construction of the prototype have been involved students from the School of Industrial Engineering and the School of Naval and Ocean Engineering.

In presenting the prototype, which took place in the courtyard of the Naval Hospital, was attended by the Vice President for Coordination and Planning UPCT, José Antonio Cascales, as well as the head of the UPV in the project, Professor Vicente Colomer.
