A thesis presented in more accessible UPCT identification of products from a supermarket by wireless technology (27/09/2010)

Allow identification of products or people to pass a certain point wireless technology thanks to a small chip.

The thesis presented by Maria Victoria Bueno at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) more accessible implementation of this technology will have many practical applications in a short period of time.

For example, in supermarkets replace laser readers were introduced almost 20 years ago and that identify the product price.

But with this technology will no longer be necessary to remove the purchase of the car.

"The buyer will have to go through a corridor whose sides will antennae similar to those that now exist in the doors of shops to detect theft.

After crossing the hall, which takes a few seconds, a machine will print the ticket with all products of the car and the amount to be paid.

It will be simple, fast and transparent to the user, "explains Maria Victoria Well, first student of the School of Telecommunication Engineering to join the staff of the UPCT.

RFID technology allows the identification of objects and people using a wireless communications link, without direct vision, and can identify hundreds or thousands of objects or products in a few seconds.

The doctoral thesis under the title of European PhD qualified with Excellent Cum Laude, has focused on improving the technology, protocols and sizing techniques which are compatible with current standards and which can overcome the problems existing in the process of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in real environments traceability of products, logistics and inventory control.

Dr. Alexander Pflaum, Area Director of Business Technologies at the Fraunhofer Center for Applied Research in Nuremberg (Germany), who was the court of the thesis, highlights the excellent quality of it and indicates that the memory book of the thesis ( written entirely in English) should be a reference book for learning and research in the identification process of FID.

The work done in the thesis is supported by numerous research findings: a patent, intellectual property, four publications in prestigious international journals, a national journal publication, three book chapters, twelve articles in international conferences, two of them awarded as best paper of the conference, and six papers at national conferences, including three awards as best paper of the conference.

During the development of the thesis, Maria Victoria Bueno made research stays relevant research centers as the Institute of Communications and Radio-Frequency Engineering at Vienna University of Technology in Austria, and the Research Center for Computer Science in Schloss Dagsthul Dagsthul (Germany).
