La Cueva Victoria 200 fossil adds to his collection this season of excavations (30/07/2010)

The last season of excavations at Cueva Victoria, which began July 1 and end on Saturday 31 with an open day to which 400 guests will attend, has been very successful for more than 20 experts in paleontology, geology and caving who worked on the site during this month, as managers have explained these works, and Carlos Luis Gibert Ferrández.

The Councillor for Tourism, Javier Herrero, who accompanied the experts, has not hesitated to highlight the support that the City will continue to provide for the continuation of such projects, one month of excavations which then leads to one year thorough investigation, with the idea of the cave open to the public and publicize the wealth that it is hidden, as you will be doing on Saturday, although in this case is for a small number of people.

With regard to new findings in the paleontological field, with this campaign has increased the collection of fossils from Cueva Victoria in 200 pieces, some of them, as highlighted by Gibert, valuable both for its spectacular as its scientific interest.

Is the case with the identification of new dental materials African primate Theropithecus cf.

Oswaldi, being the only site in Europe has certainly this species, and a new species of large deer that is not mentioned is the ancestral species of large deer that inhabited Europe during the Middle Pleistocene.

In addition, it has recovered full Equus femur at the site.

Femur is the only complete collection Equus and is going to be useful to calculate the size of horse Victoria Fossil Cave.

As regards the geological field, has been able to determine the age of the cave, which dates back 1.2 million years.

And caving in appearance, much progress has been finding new routes which, in turn, open doors in all probability spaces that will house more fossils.

Keep in mind that in Victoria Cave is over 3,500 meters of natural galleries and mining.

Currently, 90 percent of the fossils found in this site are in Cartagena, in the Municipal Archaeological Museum Enrique Escudero de Castro, but there are still pieces found in the 70's, before the excavations of 1985, which are scattered in private collections and are being collected so that they can be with others in Cartagena.
