The Social Action group has been part of the joint-combined exercise, which annually organizes the Military Emergency Unit (UME) in Spain, and this year has been carried out in the Region of Murcia, with the simulation of an earthquake that affected the Tuesday, April 24, to Cartagena.

That same day, the 40 municipal technicians of the Social Action group, dependent on the Department of Social Services of the City of Cartagena, acted coordinated with the rest of the staff.

In this simulation the local capacities to react to a natural disaster have been evaluated, in which the coordinated action of all the municipal services before a catastrophe of this type should be highlighted.

Thanks to this exercise, the first steps have been taken to create a definitive Municipal Action Protocol.

Among the 40 workers of the Department of Social Services were: psychologists, an interpreter, social workers, social educators and janitors.

All of them began the exercise at 9:15 am on Tuesday, April 24, when from the CECOPAl they notified the Social Action group of a contamination alert, which advised the confinement and subsequent evacuation of the residents of Alumbres and Vista Alegre.

The Social Action group, whose coordination center was established in the building of La Milagrosa, was then divided into two teams.

The first of them moved to evacuate 50 students from the school of Alumbres, 4 disabled in the same town and another 20 elderly, between Vista Alegre and Alumbres.

For this evacuation, the Social Services staff had 2 buses and a vehicle adapted for the disabled (provided by the Cartagena Red Cross).

The second team moved to the place indicated as 'safe place' to house the victims, in this case the chosen space was the Palace of Sports of Cartagena.

The Social Action group then coordinated the reception of the victims, establishing a point of affiliation, psychological care, and another team that distributed the first 'kit' of hot foods and beverages.

In Palacio de Deportes, a person who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, two minors who suffered itchy eyes and vomiting, as well as attending to an elderly person who suffered an anxiety attack was also treated.

After completing this exercise that simulated an earthquake, the Department of Social Services of the city of Cartagena will continue with the training of these 40 professionals who form the Social Action group, to give an immediate response if there is any natural disaster in the municipality of Cartagena .
