The residents of La Magdalena pay homage to their elders (18/04/2018)

The residents of La Magdalena, a town that gives its name to the historic deputation of the western area of the municipality of Cartagena, held an event last Sunday, April 15, in which they inaugurated the statue dedicated to 'Our Majors' in which they participated. the councilor of Municipal Services, Juan Pedro Torralba.

The statue has been made in sheet metal and iron, by the artist Alhameño and retired blacksmith of 81 years: Alfonso Núñez, and represents two elderly people, male and female, sitting on a bench.

The day began in the social premises of the Neighborhood Association of La Magdalena, whose room became a photographic studio, where the artists Javier Carrasco, Pablo Robles and Antonio J. Liarte, of the Cartagena Photographic Association 'CLIK!'

and the photographic group 'JAPAAN', installed their lighting equipment with a black background with bench-sculpture as a seat for the realization of portraits of different styles of the older neighbors of La Magdalena.

There took place an emotional encounter between the inhabitants of the town and those who were born or lived part of their lives in the place, but now they no longer reside in it, since in some cases they had not seen for decades.

The final result of this photo shoot will be the creation of an interesting exhibition with faces, hands and other elements that will tell us the course of life.

While the protagonists waited their turn to pose, the prestigious cartoonist and caricaturist Rogelio García and his inseparable companion Joaquin Alcaraz, entertained and amused all the attendees by making drawings and caricatures of them.

At the end of the photo session an appetizer of products from our land and our field was offered, in which wine, beans, peas and Tallante cheese were not lacking.

As a culmination to the activity, the statue-bench was moved to its final location, where the older ones usually sit down to "talk", next to the bus shelter marquee.

All those present made a special memory for the elderly who, due to their high age and illnesses, could not be present and an emotional minute of silence, "in memoriam" of deceased relatives and neighbors of the town.

The president of the Neighborhood Association of La Magdalena, Ginesa García Conesa, and Antonio Bernal Aznar, president of the Neighborhood Board of Marfagones Mills, spoke at the ceremony.

Both highlighted the efforts of the entities that preside over trying to improve many of the inequalities and deficiencies that the inhabitants of the western zone have, as well as the preservation and rescue of the traditional culture and heritage.

Later, councilor Juan Pedro Torralba joined the demands for equality so that citizens residing in the countryside have the same rights as those of the city and announced to the neighbors the next installation of some bio-healthy games in the square, especially suitable for the exercise of the elderly, as well as the implementation of the pilot experience of a public transport line that unites the inhabitants of this area with the city, after many years without service.

Finally the author of the statue, Alfonso Núñez, who with his 81 years said he felt young, creative and active, encouraged to sit with his characters in the bank to talk and reflect, since "our elders have many things to tell us" .

The sculpture aims to be an artistic element of interest in the town and the western area of our Cartagenero field, which is added to the initiatives developed by the Neighborhood Association of La Magdalena, such as the pictorial mural on the collection of the Almond that is made in 2016 with the collaboration of the artist Juan Pedro Esteban and the Pigmentos Association.

But above all its installation is a Tribute to the Elders and their wisdom.

They are the bearers of our past and their livelihoods and living transmitters of the traditional, popular and rural cultural heritage of our peoples to the new generations.

This Tribute to Our Majors has been organized by the Neighborhood Association of La Magdalena, together with the Marfagones Mills Neighborhood Board, the Cartagena Photographic Association 'CLIK!'

and the photographic group 'JAPAAN'.
