The PP proposes to turn the submarine'Tonina' into a floating museum (09/04/2018)

The Popular Party has registered a motion in the Regional Assembly with which it seeks to convert the submarine S-62 'Tonina' into a floating museum that the Navy ceded to the City of Cartagena thirteen years ago, recalled the popular deputy, Elena Ruiz Valderas who considers that making the submersible visitable will be a tourist revulsive for Cartagena.

Our city has great tourist and cultural potential, where pieces of great patrimonial value linked to its rich history such as the Punic wall, the Roman theater or 'Cartagena, Port of Cultures' have been valued, however, it has even more potential , and much of its recent history is linked to the Navy and shipbuilding, said Ruiz.

For the PP regional deputy, Cartagena's tourism model should continue to diversify with the incorporation of new products, which will make us more competitive.

And he added that in Torrevieja, the S-61 'Dolphin' was transformed into a museum and in ten years it has received more than a million visitors.

Ruiz believes that it is time for the Consistory of Cartagena to resume a project that will expand the tourist and cultural offer of the city.

It has also appealed to the need for cooperation between the different administrations and actors involved such as the Navy, Navantia and the regional and Spanish governments.

Our military-historical past is a great asset that we must take advantage of for the benefit of the city, said Elena Ruiz, who underlined the uniqueness of Cartagena thanks to its heritage linked to the Armed Forces such as the Arsenal, the Naval Museum, and especially has referred, to the museum room Issac Peral where the submersible designed by the Cartagena inventor is exhibited.

In this sense, the autonomic deputy of the PP estimates that our city is a reference in everything related to the submarine weapon.

And he has alluded to the construction of the first submersibles in the facilities of Navantia and that it is the first and only headquarters of the naval base of submarines existing in Spain.

In addition, estimates that a tourism element of this magnitude will help us to reclaim our history and our heritage, he said.
