The mayor will ask the Port Authority to finance the burial of the AVE to Cartagena and the third thread for goods (27/03/2018)

The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, will ask the Port Authority that, given its willingness to finance railway works for the transport of goods, pay for the burial of the railway lines at its entrance to Cartagena and expedite with its investment the start-up of the third thread that facilitates port traffic.

"It is very good that the Port Authority pays for the Camarillas variant, but you can not forget Cartagena, however well prepared the arrival of the AVE to Murcia, if the route is not executed to our city in the right conditions, the port will not benefit from it.

It is logical that their main investments in this regard are focused on our municipality.

So, if there is already investing 43 million euros, will have no problems in paying some infrastructure for the AVE to reach Cartagena in the right conditions, "said Ana Belén Castejón.

In this sense, the first mayor will propose in the next board of directors of the Port Authority to finance the burial at the entrance to the city and the third thread that will speed up the arrival of freight trains to the port.

"THE ALTERNATIVE IS NECESSARY BUT INSUFFICIENT"

The mayor shares with the Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena (COEC) and the Chamber of Merchants of Cartagena the concern that the alternative, which defends the Ministry of Development, is insufficient to support the rail traffic that the port requires, the arrival of high-speed trains and the necessary connection of the municipality of Cartagena with the commuter network.

"I give a clear example.

The goods must be transported at night, so the High Speed transit at that time will be impossible.

We will limit ourselves to two or three trains during the day, which will be insufficient if we want a really efficient rail transport network ", explained the mayor.

For this reason, Ana Belén Castejón will ask that not only the third thread be built to adapt the line to the European width (AVE and goods), which is not opposed, but also the Alternative West, by Fuente Álamo, with which the lines of the east zone would be practically exclusively for rail traffic and the commuter network, to which Cartagena can not renounce.

In addition, with this proposal the port of Cartagena could take their goods through the baypass of Beniel to the center and east of the country, and through the west alternative could reach Andalusia without having to go through Murcia.

"Now is the time for the new president of the Port Authority to demonstrate his true involvement with Cartagena and take a step forward to take charge of the cost of these proposals that would benefit our port to a large extent.

Cartagena is the fourth port of Spain and the first in freight traffic.

If we want to keep growing we can not plan infrastructures that are obsolete in the medium term, "said Castejón.

The mayor is also planning to present an initiative at the next plenary session so that all political groups can support this proposal.
